CrossWater+ Workshop in Tirana Calls for Regional Cooperation in Wastewater Treatment

A high-level regional workshop titled “Wastewater Treatment: Process Design and Reclamation Management” gathered key experts, institutional leaders, and international partners in Tirana under the EU-funded CrossWater+ project.

Organized by the Tirana Water and Sewerage Utility (UKT), the event featured interventions from the Ministry of Environment, Polytechnic University of Tirana, World Bank, CIHEAM Bari, and regional utilities from Italy and Montenegro.
The workshop addressed pressing topics such as integrated waste management strategies, regulatory frameworks, cross-border cooperation, flood risk, and innovative solutions in water reuse. Practical experiences from Albania and the Mediterranean region highlighted the growing urgency to invest in sustainable wastewater infrastructure and governance.
“Wastewater is no longer a byproduct, but a resource,” said Ms. Evis Gjebrea, Deputy General Director of UKT, calling for enhanced collaboration among public institutions, academia, and regional networks.
The event concluded with group discussions and a strong consensus on aligning efforts for EU integration, citizen awareness, and improved infrastructure across borders.
